So I got a call from the first interview I had gone on. Yesterday I would have said it was dead but he also wants me to work for him. so two offices want me.

Kinja'd!!!

Office #1

the best part is larger projects like 20 unit condo buildings but the boss would still be running much of the show.

will also do some residential, maybe a small office building, small hotel reno

the bad part is hes a bit older and it would be just me and him.

Office #2

this office is all residential but I’d probably get my own projects. cars guys - these are the guys I wrote about last night with the 55’ chevy fender as wall art. There are two guys, the pres. is a little but older and the other is my age. I feel like I would relate and converse with them on a frieldly level as well as on a professional level.

The worst is neither offers health care. They would probably pay about the same. The first didn;t feel as stable as the second but could probably be a better learning experience with getting to work of a variety of building types.

It sounds like you’ve made up your own mind. Go for what you think will make you happy.

Nothing is more important than good professional working relationships. Not work friendships, but professional relationships. Go with the place with a boss and coworkers that value you and your contributions, that respect what you bring. Those are the places where you will learn the most and from which you will get good letters when you move on.

yea that is what made me leave the first place. I felt like I had no value, was promised raises, and barely made enough to pay bills. whats what had me leave to go to the shitty company in construction management. The people were all assholes and the boss was a money hungry prick. I never should have left architecture.

Well, in that case, you have to think about the people around you as well. Do you have a wife and children to support? In that case, #2 might be the more attractive option. If not, I’d still say #1 looks better. I worked at a Porsche dealership a few years ago, and my boss was the only reason that I still enjoyed going to work until the day that I moved on. It made all the difference.

Id say go with the one that brings you a bigger variety of experiences. I’m assuming this job won’t be your final, so gain as much experience now in many different things to become more valuable down the road.

I'm no architect though, just a laborer with aspirations of getting into project management.

yea i was pretty pissed. it was completely outside of my experience and they offered very little help getting up to speed. I’ll be much happier at either of these places

How are they getting away with not having any healthcare?

Are these part time, hourly jobs?

My wife tells me that it’s best to think long-term when making such a decision. Once you go residential, it’s harder to break back into the commercial side. Residential is also a limited market since it’s really only high-end consumers that pay for an architect.

If you want to get into designing bigger buildings, I’d take #1 (unless you think you’ll be miserable there). If you’d be happy sticking with residential, I’d like take #2.
